Of News Blackouts, Migration Woes, and Corporate Strategy!

What I have found surprising the last couple of months is that, to my knowledge, nowhere in the mainstream Kenyan press has it been reported that there is any problem with the Safaricom network. And so day after day, my sms' arrive hours late, people cannot reach me even though my phone is constantly on, and attempts to call out are often met with a beep, before the phone cuts out.
Is it just me with the problem?

I have had the same number since way back when and therefore changing networks is not really an option. You can therefore understand why I have been waiting for years now for the number migration system, promised by the CCK, to be introduced.

You will therefore understand my disappointment when I read that the Communications Commission of Kenya, has frozen plans to introduce number portability technology into the mobile phone market, leaving subscribers who want to change networks with the alternative of acquiring new numbers.
What was even more surprising was the reason given, which was that no mobile phone operator was willing to meet the higher costs associated with the proposed system.

I find it amazing that a company with one of the biggest advertising spreads in the business, yet lagging behind in subscribers, would not have taken advantage of this golden opportunity to nab the many Safaricom subscribers who would migrate in an instant if only they could keep their old numbers!

Perhaps there is a serious need for Celtel to rethink its corporate strategy, looking to the future. Maybe less emphasis on the advertising (the gains it reaps from advertising are yet to be seen), and a greater emphasis on making it easier for the converted (who are unwilling to lose their numbers) to actually join their network, would be more effective!

Christian Couple have Foster Child Removed

Meet Vincent and Pauline Matherick, devoted foster parents with an unblemished record of caring for 28 vulnerable children. They are about to have their latest foster son, for whom they have cared for two years, taken away - because they refuse to teach him about homosexuality at the age of 11.

Unknown Unknowns

Speaking of unknown unknowns!

Owuor is now speaking about a revelation of a war in Iran!

All I would say is, I won't say nothing!

Rumsfeld's Poetry

Came across a Rumsfeld quote awhile back which had me pretty amused:

As we know,
There are known knowns.
There are things we know we know.
We also know
There are known unknowns.
That is to say
We know there are some things
We do not know.
But there are also unknown unknowns,
The ones we don't know
We don't know.

Now some cheeky soul has gone and put together a little "anthology" of his works!

Wars and Rumours of Wars

All the talk of U.S. military action against Iran, coupled with the U.S. President's thinly veiled warnings directed at Iran, viewed in the light of imminent Turkish military operations in Northern Iraq, Russian support for Iran ... (etc) make for a very jittery situation in the Middle East and the wider region!

Kenya Airways and Air Safety!

I have seen Kenyan Entrepreneur's blog post on Kenya Airways and air safety in general, in response to bankelele's post.
This post should not be considered an endorsement of either view, although I personally have no problem flying KQ.
I just think a little information never hurt anyone, especially as I believe Kenya Airways still claim not to have received a copy of the accident report regarding the crash off the coast of the Ivory Coast.
A summary of the report can be found HERE.
Perhaps someone at the airline could have a look?? Especially as this isn't breaking news!
The information has been out there for quite sometime now!

Queen's Opening Speech at the Commonwealth Law Conference

You will forgive my erratic posts on the now concluded Commonwealth Law Conference, which I am churning out every now and then, in nothing approaching chronological order.

The Queen's opening speech at the conference can be found HERE

Memorable Quote:
We come together for this conference one day after the 4th anniversary of 11th September. Nothing shows more our ability to withstand the threats of terrorists than the fact that you arrive in a country on 12th September where, beyond argument, the most gripping preoccupation of the English and other major Commonwealth partners is whether England will, after twenty years, recover the ashes.
Surely, the host country could not have been one of the major commonwealth partners therein referred to!
Most Kenyans wouldn't have a clue why a fully grown man would be kissing that little toy-looking thing!
But evidently mentalacrobatics is one of the few!
